Crochet Blanket Border. Crochet blankets are such a versatile and timeless piece of furniture. Not only can they be used as bedspreads, but they can also be used as throws, or even as a floor covering.
One of the great things about crochet blankets is that they are easy to customize. You can create any design you want, and there are no rules whatsoever.
This makes crochet blanket borders a perfect project for beginners. In this tutorial, we will show you how to create a simple crochet blanket border in just a few easy steps. Once you’ve mastered this technique, you will have the skills necessary to create any crochet blanket border you desire.
Crochet Blanket Border Materials
This crochet blanket border is a great way to use up leftover yarn and make a quick and easy project! The finished border is just over 1 inch wide, so it’s perfect for adding a little extra warmth to any crocheted blanket. You can make the border using any color combination you like, and it’s simple to follow step-by-step instructions.
To begin, chain 153 stitches (this makes the width of your blanket). Then work 2 single crochet stitches in the first chain from the hook. *Skip the next 2 chains, then work 2 single crochet stitches in the next chain* repeat from *to* until you reach the end of the row.
Turn your work so that your starting chain is facing down and continue working single crochet stitches in the same row until you reach the end of your pattern, ending with a double crochet stitch in the last stitch.
Now turn your work so that your beginning chain is facing up again and start workingdc into each stitch across the entire border. Make sure not to stitch through any of the previous dc rows – you want them to be visible as decorative lines on either side of your final piece.
When you finish crocheting all the dc rows, pull out all of your yarn and cut it close to where you started – now you have a perfect edge for your crochet blanket!
Crochet Pattern
This crochet border is simple and can be worked in a few hours! The stitches are basic single crochets, so it’s easy to understand and perfect for a beginner. You will need to know how to make a basic chain stitch and how to slip stitch.
To start, chain 25 (or however wide you want your blanket border to be). Work the first row of single crochets in the same direction as the chain (see photo below).
To finish the row, turn your work so that you are now working in the opposite direction of the chain. Work 1 single crochet in each of the first 20 (chain) stitches, then 2 single crochets in each of the next 2 stitches, continuing this pattern until you reach the end of the row.
At this point, your work should look like pictured below. Skip the next stitch, yarn over, pull through both loops on hook (2 loops left on hook), and continue working single crochets in this manner until you reach the end of your row. Do not turn your work at this point – continue working directly into the last stitch made.
Now it’s time to start adding some color!
Start by working 3 double crochets into each of the last 10 single crochets made (see photo above). Then switch to light green yarn and work 3 more double crochets into each of those same 10 stitches. Leave a long tail when you’re finished (you’ll need it to weave in later).
Work 1 single crochet in each of the next 9 stitches, then 2 single crochets in each of the next 3 stitches. Work 1 double crochet in each of the next 5 stitches, then 2 double crochets in each of the next 3 stitches. Repeat these increases until you reach the end of your row.
Now it’s time to start working on the opposite side of your border. Work 1 single crochet in each of the next 8 stitches, then 2 single crochets in each of the next 4 stitches.
Work 1 double crochet in each of the next 4 stitches, then 1 double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches. Repeat these increases until you reach the end of your row.
Once again, do not turn your work at this point – continue working directly into the last stitch made. At this point, your blanket border should look something like pictured below.
Finally, weave in all ends securely.
Notes
This crochet blanket border is made up of simple dc stitches. You will need to begin by crocheting a chain (or slip knot) of the desired length. Make sure to space each stitch evenly across your hook.
After you have completed your chain, insert your hook into the first dc sp and pull up a loop (this makes the first dc). Then make your next two dc stitches directly above and below the first one.
Chain 1 and make your next dc stitch, then skip the next two dc stitches, and continue crocheting down the row, making sure to space each stitch evenly.
When you reach the end of the row, finish off with a slip knot or chain 1 (depending on how you finished the last round). Be sure to seam together both sides of your blanket border so that it looks neat and tidy!
Tips for Crocheting a Blanket Border
Here are a few tips for creating a crochet blanket border:
1. Start by making a chain foundation ring of the required size. Work in the round, using single crochets (sc), adding new stitches to the top of the previous stitch as you go. Be sure to leave a gap at the beginning and end of your border so that you can weave in your ends later.
2. When you reach the desired height or width of your blanket border, work 2 or 3 sc in each st around, ending with a sc in the first st. Fasten off and weave in any loose ends.
3. To create folds in your border, work 1 or 2 sc into each fold line before fastening off and weaving in any loose ends.
Conclusion
Finally Crochet blankets are a wonderful gift, and this crochet border is the perfect way to add personality and interest to any blanket. This crochet border is simple but stylish, and it can be completed in just a few hours or even minutes if you’re well-organized. So why not give this crochet border a try? You may be pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to create.
